Opening of Pomorie Lake Visitor Centre on a Ramsar Site in Bulgaria

08/07/2010

The Pomorie Lake Visitor Centre was officially opened on 10 June 2010. The event was well attended by the public, and official guests cut the ceremonial ribbon to inaugurate the centre: Valentina Fidanova, Project Manager and Green Balkans Management Board member, the Mayor of Pomorie, the Director of the Regional inspectorate for environment and waters and the official representative of the World Bank in Bulgaria – Florian Fichtl. Toma Belev – the Chairman of Green Balkans, wished success in the work of the new centre and read a congratulatory letter from the Vice-President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Angel Marin.

The two-storey building of the centre is situated on the bank of the lake Pomorie, close to the Salt Museum. It hosts an important exhibition presenting the natural richness of the saline lagoon and the traditional human uses of its products – sea salt and medicinal mud. Wonderful view towards the symbol of the lake – the Sandwich terns colony – can be admired from the terrace and thanks to an optical equipment made available. Additionally a camera installed on the artificial island where the colony is nesting shows the life of the birds on a monitor in the centre. The centre is planned to be multifunctional, serving as management centre of the protected area, providing information to visitors and educational facility for young and adults.

The centre is owned by the Municipality of Pomorie and will be managed by Green Balkans NGO. It was built within the project of Green Balkans “Pomorie Lake – Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Management” – (GEF MSP TF 054774) supported by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and the World Bank. Additional funding for the interior design and furnishing was made possible through the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and the state budget of the Republic of Bulgaria through an “Operative Environment Programme” set up for 2007-2013.
