Workshop to develop an Arabic language Training Programme for Wetlands Management Planning
A workshop to trial a newly developed Arabic language wetland management planning training programme was held from 15-19 December 2012 at the Azraq Oasis Ramsar Site, Kingdom of Jordan.
The Arabic language wetland management planning training programme and the workshop at the Azraq Oasis were made possible through a very generous financial donation from the Government of Fujairah Municipality, United Arab Emirates. The training course and kit was developed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in Jordan, with technical support from the Fujairah Municipality, WWF Tunisia and the Ramsar Secretariat.

The workshop was opened by Mr Mohammad Saif Al Afkham Al Hamoodi (Director of Fujairah Municipality, UAE) and was attended by 25 participants mainly from the Ramsar Administrative Authorities and Ramsar IOPs from across the Arab region in North Africa and West Asia.
This development of the wetland training programme was one of the recommendations from the ‘Workshop on Wetlands and the Ramsar Convention in West Asia’ that was held in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates in May 2011, and the training programme itself aims to build the technical capacities of key decision makers and wetland managers on the conservation and wise use of wetlands and the implementation of the Ramsar Convention.

The course content includes topics such as an introduction to the importance of wetlands, the Ramsar Convention, criteria for the designation of Ramsar Sites, and the management planning of Ramsar Sites in an adaptive and interactive framework that fits with the regional conditions and limitations. The course will be aimed at government officials, site managers and other relevant stakeholders who have a direct decision making responsibility for the conservation or management of wetlands.
