New publication on wetland restoration

12/01/2012

Dear All:

Two of Ramsar’s STRP members have helpfully reviewed a new book on wetland restoration – please feel free to share this with your colleagues.

Wetland Restoration and Construction: A Technical Guide by Thomas Biebighauser is a new publication designed to help individuals build naturally appearing and functioning wetlands.  Its contents are based on the authors’ experiences restoring over 1,400 wetlands in 18-States of the USA and two Canadian Provinces.

The book contains an impressive amount of information along with a usefully large number  of good photographs and clear figures. It covers a wide variety of techniques for planning and constructing or restoring wetlands on a site-by-site basis. Focussed very clearly on a US audience with  the examples and techniques addressing site-based issues, it does not consider in any detail wider (watershed) hydrological factors or consider the implications of such techniques on ecosystem services . That said, this is a very useful addition to the literature on wetland restoration and will be useful and interesting for a lay audience, including non-profits, landowners, students and teachers, especially given the very reasonable price and the practical focus.

Containing over 650 color photographs and drawings, the book is published by The Wetland Trust in partnership with the Upper Susquehanna Coalition, Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC), and the Center for Wetlands and Stream Restoration.  Please visit http://www.thewetlandtrust.org/wetlandrestoration  to order your copy ($22.95 not including postage).

With best regards, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
