Wetland centres in the news

12/07/2010

Greetings Everyone:

I have two worthy news item about wetlands centres to share with you.

1. The first comes from Dimitar Popov from the NGO  the Green Balkans who has just sent to the Secretariat an interesting news item about the opening of their Pomorie Lake Visitor Centre last month.  The two-storey centre is on the banks of Lake Pomorie coastal lagoon, a Ramsar Site in Bulgaria. Owned by the Municipality, the centre will be managed by the NGO. Exhibitions inside emphasize the richness of the saline lagoon and the traditional human uses of its products – sea salt and medicinal mud. The centre will manage the site as well as providing information to visitors. A full story and photos  of the centre are available here http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-news-latest-pomorielake-centre/main/ramsar/1-26-76%5E24718_4000_0__. For more information you can contact Dimitar Popov  by email: dpopov@greenbalkans.org

2. A second piece of news comes from Amy Lecciones, the CEPA NGO Focal Point for the Philippines. Amy, through her work with the Society for the Conservation of Philippine Wetlands, has been involved in a joint initiative with the Architectural Students Association at the University of the Philippines. Together they launched the Candaba Wetland Centre Design Competition resulting in 26 entries from 8 universities. Overall this was a highly successful initiative reaching out to at least 250 students, 50  architecture and landscape architecture faculties, 10 business partners, and many, many more people – already this has raised awareness about wetlands! Will the winning entry soon be built at the 3,000 hectare Candaba Wetlands? Find the answer and read the full story (including a video about the competition) here http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-news-archives-2010-candabacentre/main/ramsar/1-26-45-437%5E24713_4000_0__. With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
