About wetland centres and Wetland Link International

07/10/2010

Greetings Everyone.

Many of you are already aware of the Wetland Link International network of wetland centres and know that this network is recognized as a valuable asset for implementing the Convention’s Programme of Work on CEPA (adopted under Resolution X.8 – download it here www.ramsar.org/CEPA-Res/).  Since 2005 we have had a Memorandum of Cooperation with WLI reflecting our strong belief in the value of centres for raising wetland awareness , for training about wetlands, and for encouraging people out of their armchairs and into the natural environment. Have a look at the member centres in the WLI network here www.wwt.org.uk/wli/regional-partners

Coming up soon will be a meeting of one of the regional branches of the network:  WLI –Asia. This will be their third meeting , taking place from the 22-25th November this year, and I encourage anyone working at a centre in this region or with an interest in developing centres to consider attending. Full details are available here www.wli-asia.org/conference2010/.  I’ll be there on behalf of the Ramsar Secretariat and making a keynote speech on wetland centres and Ramsar.

Wetland centre virtual tours is the latest innovation from WLI International. Have a look here www.wlisitevisit.org/ at the special web site set up for a ‘virtual’ visit to a wetland centre - it’s already populated with tours of a few centres  and it’s a great way to share your centre and to encourage people to visit such places. If you are from a centre or have a colleague at a centre please consider getting in touch with Chris (Chris.Rostron@wwt.org.uk) to find out more about the virtual tours and what you can do.

With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
