Natural Solutions: Protected areas helping people cope with climate change
Greetings Everyone:
Natural Solutions: Protected areas helping people cope with climate change, a well-referenced publication, solidly supports the idea that protected areas have a key role to play globally in responding to climate change. Thoroughly researched by a credible list of authors, the text provides plenty of evidence that protected areas (including Ramsar Sites) are helping address the cause of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and they are also helping societies to cope with the impactsof climate change by maintaining essential ecosystem services the depend upon.
The authors provide a strong justification for looking particularly at protected areas and the publication looks at the role of protected areas in climate change mitigation and adaptation, the opportunities to use protected areas to address climate change, the implications of climate change for protected areas design, management and governance, and finishes with a section on policy recommendations to ensure that protected areas become a vital part of national and international policy instruments.
Not sure if you can face this 130-page publication? Then start with their 6-page Executive summary and take it from there…..
Definitely one for your wetlands and climate change bookshelf. It can be downloaded here [2.8MB] http://data.iucn.org/dbtw-wpd/edocs/2009-045.pdf.
The same authors have also produced a short article on this theme in the online journal Solutions – see here www.thesolutionsjournal.com/node/1008
With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
