Out of classroom learning (13/10/06)

Good morning everyone:

A powerful partnership of organisations in the United Kingdom involved in environment, cultural heritage, and adventure activities has begun a Real World Living campaign that is producing some excellent materials for educators. Making use of their multiple skills, the Field Studies Council, RSPB, National Trust, PGL, the Wildlife Trusts, and the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, are promoting out-of-classroom-learning as a key component of a child’s formal education.

You can read more about the breadth of the campaign here
http://www.field-studies-council.org/campaigns/rwl/index.aspx and you can also download one of their products, Out-of-Classroom Learning: practical information and guidance for schools and teachers in PDF format here http://www.field-studies-council.org/documents/general/rwl/OoCL.pdf. The first part of this 28-page booklet has a variety of examples of what the Real World partners are able to offer in outdoor learning, while the second part gives simple guidance on how to organise activities and visits as well as what to expect from professional organisers of such activities. A short section at the end gives contact details (including web sites) of the partners and others who can provide teachers with more information.

Best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
