WWD 2007 - only three weeks to go.... (09/01/07)

Good afternoon everyone:

It’s only a little over three weeks until February 2nd, World Wetlands Day, and we are receiving emails every day of the creative plans being developed by many of our key actors. It’s tight, but there is still time to request our materials, and this year several of them can be downloaded from our web site. Full details are available here http://www.ramsar.org/wwd/7/wwd2007_index.htm.

Some early WWD news exemplifies the level of creativity, first from Sofia Spirou in our MedWet office in Athens, and then from Carrie Ma from the Hong Kong Wetland Park.

In Athens, the public transport system TRAM SA has agreed to sponsor an advertisement on WWD to be shown on the screens available in each car. Servicing over 60,000 passengers per day, the buses, running on electricity, cover about a quarter of the city of Athens. This offers an opportunity to reach a wider public than in past celebrations of WWD. Moreover, the buses being environment-friendly and the advertisement being paper-free, offer a suitably ‘green’ medium for the WWD message.

Hong Kong Wetland Park has developed a section on their web site to usefully give some local perspectives on our theme as well as information on WWD activities at the Park, and a flyer to advertise WWD events for distribution in Hong Kong (you can see it on our web site here: http://www.ramsar.org/wwd/7/wwd2007_rpts_hongkong01.htm). I am fortunate enough to be attending the first Wetland Link International-Asia Symposium at the Park in late January, jointly organized by the Park and WWF Hong Kong, and I will also attend their WWD event where Ramsar’s Secretary General will be officiating on Saturday 27th January. More details on WWD on their web site here http://www.wetlandpark.com/wwd/en/home/.

We look forward to hearing from you about your WWD activities in due course.

Best regards, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
