Treasures in the Sea: new resource book for teachers (18/12/07)
Good morning everyone:
From the Bahamas comes Treasures in the Sea, a new resource book providing teachers with both the scientific information and a range of hands-on activities to help students discover the sea and all of its treasures. It comes with background information as well as a range of activities aimed specifically at grades 3-6 although activities can be adapted for other age groups.
If you go here http://treasures.amnh.org/index.html you can download the whole publication (7MB) or download by chapter. You can also link to resources related to the activities and find out about the teacher training workshops that have been organised in the Bahamas to help teachers feel more comfortable with the material.
The material covered includes basic marine ecology such as life cycles and critical habitats for certain species, but it also includes activities that help students understand the cultural and economic connections and the need for sustainable use of marine resources.
One of the contributing authors includes a member of this list, Lyn Gape from the Bahamas National Trust, who is the NGO CEPA Focal point for Ramsar!
With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
