News from Wetlands International: a peatland film and mangrove guidebook (31/03/08)

Greetings everyone:

Two items of news from Wetlands International:

(i) Wetlands International has produced a film about peatland loss and climate change. The film highlights the work of the Central Kalimantan Peatland Project. It was shown at the UN summit in Bali and will also be shown at the Convention on Biodiversity in Bonn, May 2008. Watch it online here:

(ii) New publication: Mangrove Guidebook for Southeast Asia, by Wim Giesen, Stephan Wulffraat, Max Zieren and Liesbeth Scholten.

This book marks the first attempt to cover all mangrove plant species in Southeast Asia, providing those involved with the management and conservation of mangroves in this region with a valuable resource for identifying mangrove plants. This responds to the recognized needs of NGOs, Governments and local communities involved in mangrove restoration and rehabilitation in terms of species recognition, and it has helpfully included species of plants associated with mangroves but not confined to this habitat (such as grasses, herbs and ferns, trees, shrubs and climbers).

Produced by Wetlands International in Indonesia in partnership with FAO, this 534-page manuscript includes many illustrations. You will be happy to note that it can be downloaded from the FAO web site in 12 sections here http://www.fao.org/docrep/010/ag132e/ag132e00.htm.

With best wishes, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
