The Psychology of Climate Change : A Guide for Scientists, Journalists, Educators, Political Aides, and the Interested Public

10/03/0010
Greetings Everyone:

The authors of the publication The Psychology of Climate Change : A Guide for Scientists, Journalists, Educators, Political Aides, and the Interested Public help you through the steps you will need to take to go beyond informing your readership about the solutions to climate change to motivating and empowering them to adopt the needed changes. This has a rather similar goal as a previous publication I have referred to (see here http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-news-cepa-communicating/main/ramsar/1-26-253%5E24217_4000_0__ ) but the present guide is specifically focused on communicating climate change solutions and is rather less cerebral in its approach - I found it VERY much easier to read.

Although the based on research on how the public in the US respond to climate change messages, I think many communicators will find the material relevant to their own situation. Although intended for anyone who communicates about climate change - from scientists, journalist, educators, political aides to concerned citizens - its main purpose is to help communicators reach two key audiences: the general public and decision makers from both government and the business world. The chapter headings give you a good idea of the approach: Know your audience; Get your audience's attention; Translate scientific data into concrete experience; Beware the overuse of emotional appeals; Address scientific and climate uncertainties; Encourage group participation; and Make behavior change easier.

The 48-page text is well laid out, written in a light, easy-to-read style, and makes good use of illustrations including some amusing cartoons.

The guide is available on this site http://www.cred.columbia.edu/guide/ where you can either access it online chapter by chapter or download it as a PDF. You can apparently also request a paper copy.

With best regards, Sandra Hails, Ramsar Secretariat
