1st European River Prize: call for nominations and proposals

28/02/2013

The International River Foundation (IRF) awards the Thiess International Riverprize, one of the world’s most valuable environmental awards at global level. This year, besides its international and Australian prizes, the IRF is awarding for the first time a European River Prize. Organisations, public and private, governmental or not, involved in the restoration and protection of rivers, lakes, estuaries or any other wetland type may enter the Riverprize. The size of your river or budget is not a barrier to winning. It is the integration of your programmes, innovations used and achievements made towards improved river and wetland ecosystem health that the judges are assessing.

Download the Riverprize application guidelines and the list of frequently asked questions at www.riverfoundation.org.au. Enter your details and you will be e-mailed a link to your secure application form. You have to submit a first stage application by 29 March 2013. Then, shortlisted candidates will be notified by mid-April to submit a more detailed nomination by the end of May. Finalists will be announced in early July and will be invited to the 5th European River Restoration Conference in Vienna (Austria), where the cash prize will be awarded on the occasion of a gala dinner on 12 September 2013.

The 5th edition of the European River Restoration Conference, taking place on 11-13 September 2013 in Vienna, will be the occasion to celebrate successes and address challenges in river restoration. Ramsar and related wetland actors are strongly encouraged to submit their contribution for a presentation on one of the proposed conference themes (such as European policies, water resources management challenges, flood risk management, re-balancing water use benefits, green infrastructure, multi-use landscapes, maintaining water supply and biodiversity, ensuring local sustainability, tools and shared challenges for river restoration). Visit www.errc2013.eu for more details. In particular, Ramsar actors are encouraged to copy their proposals to the Ramsar Secretariat (europe[at]ramsar.org). This will allow us to assess the feasibility of organising a specific Ramsar Convention-related session during the conference (if you demonstrate sufficient interest for it). Your proposals are welcome. Please note the deadline to submit proposals by 15 April, and for early-bird registration for the conference by 15 May 2013.
