The Ramsar Wetland Disease Manual - an important new resource
The Ramsar Wetland Disease Manual: Guidelines for Assessment, Monitoring and Management of Animal Disease in Wetlands has now been published as Ramsar Technical Report no. 7 and can be downloaded in PDF format (9.8MB) from http://www.ramsar.org/pdf/lib/rtr7-disease.pdf.
Aimed primarily at wetland managers as well as wetland policy makers, it provides practical guidance to managing healthy wetlands. The generously-illustrated Manual recognises the key role that wetland managers play in prevention of disease problems and highlights the importance of integrating disease management into wetland management plans.
It provides a range of principles of disease management, together with both specific and generic practices for preventing and controlling diseases in wetlands. User-friendly factsheets of a wide range of priority animal diseases of wetlands are also provided, along with numerous case studies illustrating disease management in wetlands in action. Appendices lead to further contacts and resources, key messages, a glossary, and more.
The 360-page Manual has been prepared by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and a broad range of contributing authors and editors on behalf of the Ramsar Convention and its Scientific and Technical Review Panel. The STRP and Secretariat wish particularly to thank Ruth Cromie, Rebecca Lee, and Judith Newth of WWT for their major efforts in preparing and compiling this important new resource.
