Regional Training Workshop on Environmental Flows

I am sure that you are well aware of the current discussions on the impacts of excessive storage, diversion and or abstraction of river flows for various purposes on the downstream ecology, water quality, biodiversity, livelihoods, etc. The water resource managers have been concerned with these impacts and have called for the inclusion of environmental flows in the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) plans. The topic of environmental flows has assumed greater importance in recent years in the Himalayan region in the context of the hydropower projects currently in progress (or planned). Currently, there is a near total lack of clarity on the subject, and there is as yet no consensus on approach and methodology, as well as there a paucity of required data from the field studies.

Therefore, the National Institute of Ecology, jointly with other prominent organisations, and with partial support from the UNDP-sponsored CapNet (a IWRM network), has planned a Regional Training Workshop, in Haridwar during 6-11 December 2012. It is titled as "Factoring Environmental Flows in Integrated Water Resources Management" as it targets the researchers and water resource managers in South Asia. A copy of the Announcement with further details is attached for your information.

The training workshop is targeted particularly at the South and southeast Asian countries. You may like to attend the course or forward this announcement to colleagues / friends/ officers of your organisation. We are sure that the participants to the Workshop will benefit from it and will be able to address properly the issue in the related projects.

The interested and sponsored participants may communicate with the undersigned at the earliest for further information on the course and the arrangements. The applications and any other communication may be addressed to the Course Coordinator at nieindia@gmail.com. I can also be contacted directly on my mobile (+91) 9414044283.

with very best regards, Sincerely
