By doing so, Switzerland contributes to one of the goals outlined in the Ramsar Convention’s Strategic Plan for 2009-2015, which is to reach a protected area of 250 million hectares by 2015.

The extension of the site was officially announced by the Ambassador Mr. Dante Martinelli, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the UN, as part of his welcoming address at the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Ramsar Convention in Geneva on 19 May 2011. On the same day, the official extension of the site was celebrated at “Les Grangettes” with the inauguration of a new floating island for terns and a bird watching tower for visitors.
