Joint Declaration between Greece and Turkey on collaboration concerning the Evros / Maritsa / Meriç River

25/05/2010

Last week,Thymio Papayannis, MedWet/Com Honorary Member, informed the Ramsar Secretariat about the signature of a Joint Declaration between Greece and Turkey on collaboration concerning the Evros / Maritsa / Meriç River. The Declaration was signed in Athens on 14 May by the two Ministers of Environment in the presence of Prime Ministers Erdogan and Papandreou.

The Declaration opens the door for substantial collaboration between the two sides. It remains to be seen how Bulgaria will be involved in this process.

The Declaration mentions the Ramsar Convention and the groundwork for this agreement was laid by WWF Greece with the collaboration of the MedWet Secretariat. After the signature of the formal agreement on Prespa Lakes among Albania, Greece, and the FYR of Macedonia on 2 February 2000, this new development seems to consolidate a positive trend in transboundary cooperation in SE Europe.
