The purpose of the agreement is to establish a framework for collaboration to further common goals, including the mobilization of UNEP-WCMC’s technical and capacity-building expertise for an improved implementation of the Ramsar Convention. Another area of cooperation is to make operational and further develop the Ramsar Indicators of Effectiveness and options for their integration with the 2010 and post-2010 biodiversity indicators of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Jon Hutton, Director, UNEP-WCMC, declared that the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre is proud to provide support to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, building on a long history of cooperation between the two institutions.
"With signing the Memorandum of Cooperation, I recognise the crucial role that the Ramsar Convention plays in ensuring the wise use of water resources and conserving biodiversity all around the globe. UNEP-WCMC will focus its support to Ramsar on Ramsar sites and protected areas, climate change mitigation and adaptation in wetlands, biodiversity indicators, and national reporting to the Ramsar Convention and related treaties”, he added.
