Environmental law workshop in Côte d'Ivoire

First all-Francophone Judiciary Training Workshop in Environmental Law
Environment Enters the African Court Rooms

Abidjan, 27 April 2009 – The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Francophone Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEEF) and the African Institute for Environmental Law (AIEL) are jointly organizing from 27 to 30 April 2009 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the first training seminar in environmental law exclusively for magistrates of Francophone Africa.

Facing increased infringements on environmental law on the continent, notably in the area of pollution; and given the important role of magistrates in a society governed by laws, the training seminar aims to provide participants with legal means to protect the environment so that the Judge, via his decisions, plays his role in the sustainable development process of the states.

The seminar - the first of its kind in Francophone Africa - aims also to offer participants extensive knowledge in environmental law, in order to allow them to assist their nations to better comply with their obligations toward multilateral environmental agreements, to which they are parties.

Thirty-five (35) magistrates practicing in various tribunals and courts of appeal in West and Central African countries will take part in the seminar.

The training is facilitated by advocates, francophone university professors from France, Belgium, Canada, Senegal and experts from international secretariats of multilateral agreements on the environment.

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights and the Minister of Environment and Water and Forestry of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire will attend the opening ceremony of this important event.

The workshop is sponsored by the Ramsar Convention Secretariat, UNEP, IEPF, the Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions and Star Alliance through its Biosphere Connection program. The organizers have pledged to follow up with similar and regular training workshops in countries that express such needs.
