World Migratory Bird Day 10-11 May 2008

Migratory Birds - Ambassadors for Biodiversity
10-11 May 2008

Are you fascinated by the phenomenon of bird migration? Are you worried about the threats migratory birds are facing? Do you want to help raise awareness for migratory birds or are you already planning a bird-related activity, such as a bird watching excursion, a presentation or similar?

Then come and join hundreds of others around the world in the upcoming WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY CELEBRATION taking place on 10-11 MAY 2008!

World Migratory Bird Day is a global initiative devoted to promoting migratory birds and their conservation worldwide. The theme for this year is “Migratory Birds – Ambassadors for Biodiversity”.

To make World Migratory Bird Day a commemorative event celebrated throughout the world, we strongly count on the support and contributions of interested individuals and dedicated organisations. By registering your planned activity on the WMBD website, you can help promote this global event and link your own event to the many other activities taking place around the world that weekend. Registering is simple and it only takes a few minutes! Take a look at our website to learn more about World Migratory Bird Day and how to register your activity online:

The above website provides information on migratory birds and this year’s theme on biodiversity, and it also gives an impression of WMBD activities that took place in 2006 and 2007. Please have a look and get inspired for your own World Migratory Bird Day event in 2008!

On the website you will also find an announcement, a short WMBD trailer and the electronic version of the WMBD 2008 poster for download. We would like to ask you to help promote World Migratory Bird Day by further circulating this message and by featuring news about WMBD in your own electronic or print media resources prior to the WMBD weekend. Please do not hesitate to adjust the announcement to suit your communication needs and help spread the news about this year's WMBD!

Thank you for your help and continued support - we look forward to celebrating this global event with you!

Yours Sincerely

Bert Lenten

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is an annual event, which was celebrated worldwide in over 56 countries in 2007. It was initiated by the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (UNEP/AEWA) in collaboration with the global Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS) - two international environmental treaties administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

World Migratory Bird Day was created to raise awareness for the need to protect all migratory birds and their habitats throughout the world.
