Program was anchored by Mrs. Sarita Mehra, Guest Faculty, Environmental Sciences, WPC. She is also a Researcher working on the aspects of threatened avifauna of southern Rajasthan.
Rajputana Society of Natural History (Registered NGO) has organized WWD'07 in the "CITY OF LAKES"-Udaipur, Rajasthan, India in collaboration with Government Women's Polytechnic College and State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (Nationalized Bank).
The program started at 10.30 am with the lightening of lamp of Goddess Saraswati by Mrs Medha Vaish (Acting Principal & HOD, Textile Designing, WPC). Ms. Sakina Kadar (2nd year student, WPC) welcomed all the guests and nature lovers and briefed the work of the students of 2nd year of WPC on different wetland themes. The work was displayed in form of posters (group wise description of different themes is given below).
Mrs. Preeti Murdia (Asstt. Manager, SBBJ) first briefed the role of financial sector in awareness programs. As the representative of the supporting organization SBBJ, she narrated role of SBBJ for environmental works and assured to continue assistance for such awareness programs. Further, she added different modes of financial support by SBBJ for the youth and educators/ professionals in form of loans or grants for their proposals after reviewing. Being the birdwatcher, she shared her experiences/knowledge and discussed the probable reasons for declining waterfowl population in the city lakes of Udaipur.
Mr. Satya Prakash Mehra (Project Officer, WWF-India and Research Scholar) delivered the lecture on the importance of WWD and historical perspectives of Ramsar Convention. He also explained the importance of WWD' 07 theme, "Wetlands and Fisheries" in light of the local concern. The role of WWF-India in the conservation of wetlands of country was also briefed by him.
The Guest Speaker Professor Kamal Kapoor also delivered the lecture on the importance of wetlands and fisheries in the tribal belt of Rajasthan (the southern part of Rajasthan which includes Banswara, Chittorgarh, Dungarpur, Sirohi and Udaipur). He presented the statistical account of fish production from the lakes of Udaipur and the dependency of tribal community on the fisheries. He stated that the demand of fresh water fish species of Jaisamand Lake (one of the biggest artificial lake of India) is all over the Indian subcontinent.
Mr. Satya Prakash Mehra presented the problems and issues of the lakes/ wetlands of Udaipur through slide show. In his slides he covered the pollution problems of lakes of Udaipur which are generally overlooked by the common man. Through the movie of WWF-India on the wetland conservation program of Ladakh, he explained the work of WWF-India in southern belt of Rajasthan.
The flash movie of WWD'07 has also been shown to the audience depicting the facts of wetlands and fisheries all over the world.
In the open interactive session the queries of the audience were answered by Prof. Kapoor and Mr. S. P. Mehra.
On behalf of the RSNH Mrs. Vinay Mehra, Vice-President, RSNH delivered the vote of thanks to all the supporting agencies, speakers and the participants of the program. Thanks to Mrs. Sangeeta Saxena, Principal, WPC for granting permission for organizing program at their College and Mrs. Medha Vaish, Acting Principal for her presence in the program. She equally acknowledged Mr. M. I. Dholakia, DGM, SBBJ for their approval to support the program and Mrs Preeti Murida, SBBJ; Mr. S. P. Mehra, Project Officer, WWF-India and Prof. Kamal Kapoor for their expertise inputs in the program. She appreciated the effort of students of 2nd year and their Guide Mrs. Sarita Mehra for their work on environmental issues related to wetlands of Udaipur due to which the program was incomplete. Finally, thanks has been conveyed to Mr. Abhay Singh (Computer Faculty, WPC) and all the staff members of WPC for their coordination.
The poster exhibition was the main focus of WWD'07 program. As a subject, Environmental Sciences has been recently introduced in the syllabi of this College. The students of 2nd year under the guidance of Mrs. Sarita Mehra (Guest Teacher, Environmental Science), visited wetlands of the City during their excursions. The observations were compiled in form of posters. These posters were displayed during WWD'07 program. The exhibition highlighted the issues of concerns for the wetlands of Udaipur along with other environmental problems. The posters were prepared in groups by the students. The main themes along with the names of leader of group are summarized below:
