World Wetlands Day 2004 -- Thailand

I would like to inform you about World Wetlands Day (WWD) in Thailand. We organized WWD activities in 3 provinces:

1. Phru Khuan Khi Sian, Wetlands in Thale Noi Wildlife Non - hunting Area

On 13 September 2003 was 5th anniversary that Phru Khuan Khi Sian was nominated as Thailand's first Ramsar Site. Pattalung Province, National Park, Wildlifes and Plants Conservation Department organized activities for 5th anniversary Thailand's the first Ramsar Site on WWD during 24 January - 2 February 2004 thus essay contest that divided to 3 levels (primary school, secondary school and university), Thale Noi photos contest, Thale Noi Youth Camp, describing in the title "From the Mountains to the Sea: Wetlands at work for Us" , "Saroma Lake: Twin of Thale Noi", "Thale Noi in the past and the present" , discussing in the title "5th anniversary of Khuan Khi Sian Ramsar Site: What're benefit and lost", "Future of Khuan Khi Sian and Thale Noi". There were participants from relevant central and local organizations: Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, Pattalung Province, Wetland International, students from local schools, and local people. In this regard, the Governor of Pattlung Province, Mr. Prajak Suwanpakdee also said that if possible he would like to nominate Thale Noi Non - hunting Area as Ramsar Site not only Khuan Khi Sian.

2. Wetlands of Bung Khong Long Non - Hunting Area in Nong Khai province

The WWD activities on 2 February 2004 at Bung Khong Long were indigenous shows, local product selling, wetlands and Bung Khong Long exhibitions, and Bung Khong Long Conservation activity. There were participants from relevant central and local organization such as office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Office of Bung Khong Long Non - Hunting Area, Mahasarakham University, students in local schools, and local people.

3. Songkhram River in Nakhon Phanom province

The WWD activities between 1 - 2 February 2004 at Songkhram River in Nakhon Phanom province were drawing in the title "Songkhram river basin in the imagine" and explained about drawing inspiration, indigenous shows, Songkhram river basin research multimedia show and exhibitions, important of wetlands and Ramsar Convention exhibition, exhibition of Nakhon Phanom Environment Conservation Club, Office of Nakhon Phanom Forest picture exhibition, discussing about "Songkhram River in the present and Songkhram River in the Future that I want", "Using local knowledge for Songkhram River conservation", and question - answer about wetlands and Songkhram River. There were participants from Office of Nakhon Phanom Forest, Nakhon Phanom Environment Conservation Club, Sakon Nakhon Community Radio Center, IUCN, students from local schools, and novices.

Thale Noi Wildlife Non - hunting Area

The Governor of Pattlung Province was opening 5th anniversary of Khuan Khi Sian Ramsar Site celebration on WWD.

The participants from relevant central and local organizations.
