World Wetlands Day 2004 -- Islamic Republic of Iran
World Wetland Day

The World Wetland Day was celebrated in Iran on February 2nd 2004 at the old Ramsar Hotel in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. More than 200 people including experts, managers, regional authorities and non-governmental organizations attended this event.
The meeting commenced officially with the speech of a representative from the Mazandaran Governor General's Office .He stated that more than 50% of the Mazandaran provincial area is covered with wetlands. He also emphasized on the necessity of conserving these Sustainable Ecosystems. Noting the special attention to environmental issues in the country's Third Development Plan, he required the revival of wetlands with Biotechnology.
Next, Dr. Mehrdadi (DoE Provincial Director General) described the environmental situation in Mazandaran province.
The session continued with the presentations of:
- Mr. Rohani, mentioning the adaptation of wetlands and digital visits from them; Mr. Karimi, describing the transboundary wetlands;
- Dr. James Hindson, talking about effective education and awareness raising for children and youth regarding wetlands;
- Mr. Dadjoo, introducing the Guide Book for Ramsar Sites in Iran.
Finally, the session ended by reading a statement from Mr. Bridgewater (Secretary General, Ramsar Convention) and showing a documentary film about birds and their breeding.
