Ramsar's four IOPs reaffirm support in Bangkok

by Sebastiá Semene Guitart

Bangkok, Thailand, November, 21st 2004 (Ramsar Convention Secretariat):

The four most senior officers of Ramsar's International Organization Partners met on Friday in Bangkok, during the 3rd IUCN World Conservation Congress, to reiterate their support to the Ramsar Convention. During a brief meeting, Achim Steiner, Director General of IUCN - The World Conservation Union; Claude Martin, Director General of the World Wide Fund for Nature - WWF International; Mike Rands, Director and Chief Executive of BirdLife International; and Jane Madgwick, Director General of Wetlands International, signed the new Memoranda of Understanding with Peter Bridgewater, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention. Each of the representatives of Ramsar's IOPs explained their views on the importance of the Ramsar Convention and why they think their contribution, as an lOP, can benefit the Convention.

The signing ceremony took place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in the presence of Col. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Environment of Uganda, who also expressed his satisfaction to see Ramsar IOPs' commitment to the Convention and especially to the preparation of the upcoming COP9, planned for Kampala in November 2005. Several representatives from IUCN and the Government of Uganda were also present at the ceremony, including Paul Mafabi, head of the Wetlands Inspection Division and the key person responsible for the preparations for COP9. Javad Amin Mansour, vice-chair of Ramsar's Standing Committee, was also present, as well as Frank Rijsberman, Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) which could become, in the future, another of Ramsar's IOPs.

Editor's Note: The four International Partner Organizations have been key implementing forces for the Convention's principles since its early days in the 1960s and 1970s, and their role was institutionalized as formal "IOPs" by Resolution VII.3 (1999). The new MOUs will be available on the Ramsar site soon.
