16/02/2002

AKPABUYO BAKASSI GREEN MOVEMENT (ABGREMO)

PRESS RELEASE - ABREMO MARKS WORLD WETLAND DAY 2002

A non-governmental organization (NGO) Akpabuyo Bakassi Green Movement (ABGREMO) working to promote the protection of the last remaining mangrove forest of Niger-Delta (Nigeria) through education, information sharing and action programmes.

ABGREMO is holding a two-day public/school enlightenment programme beginning from 1st to 2nd February, 2002 to mark this year (2002) World Wetlands Day, the day which has been set aside by Ramsar Convention on Wetlands since 1971 and is marked every 2nd February of a year. This year's Day is very significant in the history of wetlands because of the date (02.02.02) and in view of the immense wealth of the Wetland Natural Resources that have sustained human populations for millennia. The theme for this day's celebration is "Wetlands: Water, Life and Culture", the activities scheduled to mark this day by ABGREMO include a public talkshow, distribution of wetland information package, wetland posters and stickers.

Again in view of the global significant of Cross River State Wetlands and as one of the Ramsar confirmed wetland sites, we call on all stakeholders to serve the unique wetlands of Cross River State, and Ministry of Environment should enforce Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) decree/law in all old and new projects, especially Oil Exploration Activities and Tourism Development that threaten the rich wetlands of Cross River State.

Furthermore, the state government and different law-making bodies should revisit the Cross River State Forestry Commission Bill passed as its functions and present line of programmes tends to neglect the unique wetland of Cross River State.

Finally, foundations, private sectors, Government and individuals should fund NGOs' programmes or research in this areas that will promote the sustainable use of the wetland.

Help us save the Rich World wetlands and Cross River wetlands in particular. Afrer all, our lives anchors on them.
