Wetlands International names new Programme Manager for North America
Wetlands International reports:
North American Programme Manager
Wetlands International is delighted to announce that Melanie Steinkamp will be joining the organization from 1 January 2003 as our North American Programme Manager.
Melanie will be hosted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and based out of the Office of International Affairs in Arlington (near Washington D.C.), Virginia, USA.
Melanie comes to Wetlands International from the U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, where she served over the past four years as the waterbird monitoring program director. In this capacity, she coordinated development of a continental colonial waterbird monitoring program and served as the project director for the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, recently published as part of the Waterbirds for the Americas Initiative.
As director of the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, she worked to produce a unified continental strategy for conserving waterbirds throughout their ranges in North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands.
As director of the waterbird monitoring program, Melanie developed a Web-accessible centralized database for storing continental waterbird data and worked with individuals in Canada, Mexico and the United States to develop standardized waterbird monitoring techniques. Melanie will continue to serve as the Americas' representative on North American Bird Conservation Initiative committees as an elected councilor of the Waterbird Society.
Melanie will be the Wetlands International Focal Point in North America for the American and global wetland network and will be focusing on developing linkages with waterbird and wetland conservation organizations and networks in the Americas.
