Wetlands provide important services to human societies, including water supply, sanitation, flood control and food resources. All over the world, management of water - the key component of wetlands - is an issue of crucial importance which affects the daily lives of millions of people. At the same time, many wetlands are under threat from a variety of man-induced impacts and technological developments such as hydraulic works, tourism installations and leisure activities, pollution and other forms of human intervention.

Located in the southern part of the Czech Republic, the Trebon Basin has been influenced and modified by human activities for more than eight centuries. The result is a diverse semi-natural countryside - a mosaic of more than 500 artificial fishponds, deciduous and coniferous forests, meadows, fields and wetlands crossed by numerous small streams, canals and dykes. Trebon Basin has long been the focus of intensive ecological research, and in 1977 was designated as a biosphere reserve within UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme. Trebon is also one of about 60 biosphere reserves worldwide which include areas that are also inscribed on the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Over the last few decades, nearly one hundred researchers have taken part in research in Trebon, coming from a variety of scientific disciplines and working at a range of different space and time scales and levels of biological complexity, from the cellular to the ecosystem. Research findings presented in this volume are grouped in six sections: the key role of wetlands in the Trebon Basin; fishpond management and its ecological consequences; the wetlands surrounding an ancient man-made lake; mires and peatlands in a marginal situation; and future prospects for the Trebon wetlands, including their ecological and socio-economic functions and their roles in energy and material flows at the landscape level.
