World Wetlands Day 2001: India

Dear Ms Sirisampan,

Thank you for sending the WWD-2001 material along with the posters which are received by us safely. We are planning to celebrate the World Wetlands Day which is the 30th year of Ramsar Convension in a grand way. The proposed plan is as follows :-

Chilika Development Authority, a Government of Orissa Agency, created for preservation of Chilika Lagoon, the 1st Ramsar Site of India in collaboration with PALLISHREE, a leading NGO of the State, is planning to celebrate WWD-2001 at Chilika in a grand way. A massive boat rally is organised to celebrate the WWD-2001 in which more than 500 boats will participate and about 2000 Stakeholders who are the traditional fishermen will be the part of the boat rally. Essay, debate competition was organised in the Schools located in and around the Chilika Lagoon with the theme on SUSTAINABLE WISEUSE OF THE WETLAND RESOURCES, prizes will be distributed to the successfull students during the WWD celebration. A number of schools located on the islands of the Lagoon have started nature conservation activities and the best school will be awarded with a prize during the WWD celebration.

A News Letter in local langauge and a poster in local langguage for the wiseuse of the Chilika Lagoon will be released during the occasion. A massive rally will be organised with the plackards, by the stakeholders wearing the Banian and Caps with slogans on Wise-use and 30th year of Ramsar Convension. The Secretary-General, Ramsar Centre, Japan along with three of his colleagues from Japan will also participate during the WWD 2001 celebration and the Boat Rally to be organised at Satapada, an outreach village situated on the shore line of Chilika Lagoon. The detail report along with the photographs and the hard copies of the News Letters, posters will be sent to you after the celebration.
