World Wetlands Day 2001: UK
Discover the Rivelin Valley
From Jonathan Brickland, Ponds for People:
On World Wetlands Day the Ponds Conservation Trust, Rivelin Valley Conservation Group and Yorkshire Water organised a discovery walk in the Rivelin Valley. There was a good turn out, this is a very popular river valley attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The Rivelin rises on the Pennine moors and flows in an easterly direction into the City of Sheffield. It was once a highly industrialised valley with a total of twenty-one mills. These included a paper mill, corn mills but most were associated with the Sheffield steel industry. Each mill had it's own mill pond and these are now of particular interest as valuable wetlands. The mills were abandoned many years ago and the ponds and mill goits have received little if any maintenance or management. The ponds are at varying stages of ecological succession and in this state support a wide variety of habitats enhancing the valleys conservation value.
The Rivelin Valley Conservation Group are committed to improving the valley and have carried out some excellent work. The group have in excess of three hundred committed members.
Ponds for People is a project run by The Ponds Conservation Trust which helps community groups restore their local ponds to a high standard. The Ponds Conservation Trust is a consortium of twenty-three organisations with a wide range of expertise on pond creation and restoration. Generous financial support from Yorkshire Water coupled with guidance and technical input from the Ponds for People project is helping the Conservation Group to do high quality restoration work and management of the mill ponds. The ponds have had ecological surveys and a management plan has been written for the valley. All work must be of benefit to the wildlife of the ponds but can also include improving the valley for the visitors with better footpaths, benches and information boards. All of this work is going ahead with the agreement of the landowner, Sheffield City Council.
