Wetlands of International Importance: Bulgaria, Srebarna
Srebarna. 24/09/75; Silistra; 902 ha; 44º07N 027º05E. Added to the Montreux Record, 16 June 1993. Biosphere Reserve, World Heritage Site; Nature Reserve. Bordering Romania, the site includes a freshwater lake on the Danube River floodplain, extensive reedbeds and several scarce marshland plants. An important area for numerous species of breeding, wintering and staging waterbirds, including important numbers of geese and ducks. A natural history museum and field station are located at the site. All economic, tourist, and hunting activities are strictly prohibited. The lake has suffered from, among other things, erosion of the river bed, severe nutrient-enrichment, accelerated vegetation succession and dike construction, and as a consequence the site was included in the Montreux Record in 1993. Subject of a Ramsar Advisory Mission in 1992. Ramsar site no. 64.
