Demystifying the Ecosystem Approach: the experience from Pathfinder Workshops
Invitation / Announcement
Demystifying the Ecosystem Approach: the experience from Pathfinder Workshops in three regions: an open discussion
Lunchtime side event at CBD SBSTTA6
Monday, 12 March 2001, 13:15-14:45 (date, time and location to be confirmed)
The Governments of Colombia, Malaysia and Zimbabwe, together with the UK Government and the European Community, warmly invite you to attend a side event to discuss the outcome of three regional pathfinder workshops on the Ecosystem Approach (Southern Africa (July 2000), South America (September 2000) and Southeast Asia (October 2000)). The workshops An Ecosystem Approach under the CBD, from concept to action were convened in cooperation with the Secretariat of the CBD by UNESCO, IUCN, WWF-International, and the Bureau of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971) and generously hosted by the Governments of Zimbabwe, Colombia and Malaysia. The Royal Holloway Institute for Environmental Research (RHIER) and UNESCO provided technical assistance and will jointly facilitate the discussion.
Background
Decision V/6 on the Ecosystem Approach reflected a consensus among Parties to move beyond discussion of the Ecosystem Approach concept and towards implementation. The three regional pathfinder workshops were designed to respond directly to Decision V/6. The workshops aimed to:
- Build awareness by using case studies to illustrate aspects of the Ecosystem Approach under the CBD
- Discuss perceived constraints in using the approach with a variety of stakeholders
- Share experiences of opportunities for taking action under the Ecosystem Approach
- Seek advice on priority measures needed to facilitate implementation of the Ecosystem Approach
- Identify capacity building priorities (human and technical)
- Suggest when other approaches are more appropriate
Reports
Parties and other interested bodies are invited and encouraged to examine the global overview and regional workshop reports. These will be made available on the CBDs Ecosystem Approach web site (http://www.biodiv.org/EcosysApproach/Index.html).
