Wetlands International announces ICU secondment

Wetlands International is pleased to announce that from 1 September 2000, Dr. Gerard C. Boere from the Division of International Affairs of the Netherlands Ministry for Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries, started his three year secondment with the ICU as International Programme Co-ordinator. The coming four months will be a transition period for him due to a number of ongoing commitments for the Ministry including the CAFF Meeting (Arctic Conservation) 6-12 September in Norway (where he also will represent Wetlands International) , the Chairmanship of the Bern Convention (to be finalised in December) and a number of smaller hand-over issues with his colleagues at the ministry.

Within the ICU and thus for the whole of Wetlands International, Gerard will, among many other things, be responsible for the co-operation with some of the international conventions, in particular with their scientific bodies, such as CBD, FCCC; FCCD, and CMS and develop strategic plans for Wetlands International involvement. Furthermore he will work on the development of a strategy of Wetlands International involvement in migratory species, not only birds although flyway initiatives will be an important part of his work. He will also co-ordinate some of the global activities and contribute substantially to the preparation and the organisation of the Wetlands International Advisory Council meeting in November 2001.

Finally Gerard will closely work together with Doug Taylor of the ICU on the science network and in developing new initiatives for global programmes and assist in the implementation of large projects such as the GAP filling census.
