World Wetlands Day '98 in Argentina's Patagonia

Hello Forum Members:

In joining the celebration of Wetlands Day, Foundation Inalafquen, in Rio Negro (Patagonia) Argentina, organized several activities:

* Guided tour for local authorities and press members of the "restinga" in Los Alamos (a rocky area of mayor importance for feeding and resting for the migratory birds). Calidris Canutus and Calidris Falklandicus that were banded during our previous campaigns in October and March 97 were observed.

* Guided tour to the New Hatchery and Investigation Center for Bivalve Mollusks.

* Presentation of the first series of road signs referring to the existence of the Natural Protected Area "Bay of San Antonio".

* Announcement to the press of the next International Banding Campaign for shore birds, scheduled to take place during the month of March 98 with the participation of scientists from; Canada, U.S.A., U.K. and Holland.

* Announcement to the press and public of funding from "Funds for the Americas" and help from "Wetlands International" to make brochures, videos, and manuals about the Bay of San Antonio as a critically important wetland and bird area.

* Announcement of the beginning of our campaign to name the "Natural Protected Area Bay of San Antonio" as a Wetland of International Importance and to add it to the list of Wetlands of the Ramsar Convention.
