World Wetlands Day 1998 in Japan

WWD posterWhat is World Wetlands Day? At the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee, in late October 1996, World Wetlands Day was officially designated for 2 February of every year, the anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, as an opportunity for governments, organizations, and citizens to undertake big and small actions intended to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.

This page is part of a series of reports on activities held on and about WWD '98 in various countries of the world, as reported to the Bureau.  If you should know of any other activities not mentioned on these pages, send us a note ( and we'll add it to this list.

See also our earlier list of activities reported as planned for WWD '98, a repository of inspiring ideas in itself.

Kayoka Kameda, Research Scientist, Lake Biwa Museum, reports from the Lake Biwa Ramsar site near Kusatsu, Shiga (9 March 1998):

In order to let people know the importance of the lake for waterfowls, we did a bird watching trip at Lake Biwa, one of the Ramsar sites in Japan, as an activity of World Wetland Day 1998. The details are as follows:

Date and time: Sunday, 8 February 1998, 10:00-12:30
Place: Along the shore of Lake Biwa, near the Lake Biwa Museum (Kusatsu City, Shiga, Japan)

1. Explaining how to watch birds, how to use binoculars and a field scope, and identification of waterfowl in the room of the museum.

2. Going out from the museum and watching the birds at the pond of the museum and the shore of the lake.

3. Going back into the room and explaining the waterfowl in the lake and the Ramsar Convention itself by using a logo and a poster.

[List of 12 bird species observed].

I enclose a brochure handed out to all the participants and some pictures of this activity. I am very sorry to be late in informing you. Although the preparation for activities as WWD was not enough this year, we would like to do some more activities in 1999.
