World Wetlands Day 1998 in the Slovak Republic

WWD posterWhat is World Wetlands Day? At the 19th meeting of the Standing Committee, in late October 1996, World Wetlands Day was officially designated for 2 February of every year, the anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, as an opportunity for governments, organizations, and citizens to undertake big and small actions intended to raise public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.

This page is part of a series of reports on activities held on and about WWD '98 in various countries of the world, as reported to the Bureau.  If you should know of any other activities not mentioned on these pages, send us a note ( and we'll add it to this list.

Dear Mr Blasco,

First of all in my initial letter of this year I would like to wish you all the very best for wetlands protection during 1998.

All the issues I would like to address in my letter are positive. As far as the "Restoration of wetland along the Morava River" [Small Grants Fund project] is concerned, Mr Valachoviè today confirmed that finances of the SGF arrived on the specified bank account. He is busy with implementation of the project but very optimistically seeing results.

Let me also thank your for sending us your message for the World Wetlands Day - One Drop of Water. It has arrived just in time to be translated into Slovak and distributed. Please kindly find attached the Slovak version of the message and a small publicity material produced for children. The topic of the World Wetlands Day has been spread in the media, thanks to the press conference at our Ministry on February 4th, providing the message and related information to the media in advance by several GOs and NGOs (Daphne, SZOPK).

Our very concrete action for 1998 World Wetlands Day is the proposition of five new sites to the Ramsar List, namely Orava River and its Tributaries, Poiplie, Rudava River Valley, Turiec Wetlands and Wetlands of the Orava Basin. Please kindly find complete proposals attached. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to present you the work of so many experts "hidden" in these proposals.

My final issue is regarding the Ramsar logo. In order to promote the Convention itself and wetlands protection the possibility of production of seal with the Ramsar logo was discussed. It would be used for official correspondence (including envelopes) related to the Convention as well as relevant activities at Ramsar sites. In this respect I would like to ask you for an official permission to produce and to use such a seal. Another option would be use of stickers which the Ramsar Bureau itself might be using. Being currently connected on the Internet with we are in theory able to "use" the logo.

Thank you very much for all your support and cooperation.

Sincerely yours,

Section of Nature and Landscape Protection, EIA and Cross-sectoral Relations
