3rd Pan-European Regional Meeting Announced

15/08/1997

3rd Pan-European Regional Meeting of the
Convention on Wetlands,
Riga, Latvia, 3-5 June 1997

At the invitation of the Government of Latvia, the 3rd Pan-European Regional Meeting of the Convention on Wetlands will be held in Riga, Latvia from 3-5 June 1997. The meeting will be open to representatives of European Contracting Parties, representatives of European States which are not yet Contracting Parties, representatives of supranational bodies, intergovernmental organisations, and international NGOs concerned with the conservation and wise use of wetlands. For practical and financial reasons, participation will be limited to about 100 individuals.

Building on the experience of the 1st and 2nd Pan-European Regional Meetings (Lelystad, Netherlands, 1992; Varna, Bulgaria, 1995) the meeting will be primarily technical in nature and will focus on two principal themes:

    (a) strengthening Pan-European cooperation for enhanced implementation of the Convention;
    (b) Regional preparation for the 7th Conference of Parties (Costa Rica, May, 1999).

A further announcement, programme and registration form will be distributed in January 1998. In the meantime, the Bureau is working with potential sources of financial support to ensure the participation of at least one representative from each country of Central and Eastern Europe whose economy is in transition.

Enquiries concerning all aspects of the meeting should be addressed to Mr Tim Jones, the Bureau's Regional Coordinator for Europe (phone: +41-22-999.01.73; fax: +41-22-999.01.69).
