Notification 2009/9: Briefing Note: Wetlands and the UNFCCC COP15 Climate Change Meeting (Copenhagen, 7 - 18 December 2009)

The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) presents its compliments to the Permanent Mission of … and has the honour to refer to the following:

The Ramsar Convention is calling for the Contracting Parties’ support in ensuring that wetlands will be fully recognized at the crucial upcoming Meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December 2009.

The Ramsar Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) has compiled the attached briefing note based upon recent decisions adopted by Ramsar Contracting Parties, and on recent information and recommendations provided by the STRP in relation to wetlands and climate change.

The Ramsar Secretariat requests and urges Contracting Parties to use this briefing note as an aide-memoire to prepare for and during the important Copenhagen meeting to ensure that wetland issues be given the consideration they merit.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands respectfully requests that the content of the present Note be communicated to the competent national authorities and avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Permanent Mission of … the assurance of its highest consideration.
