Diplomatic notification 1998/13: 1999 Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards
1999 Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards
The Bureau of the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) presents its compliments and has the honour to refer to the following:
Contracting Parties will be aware that the Ramsar Wetland Conservation Award was established by Resolution VI.18 of the 6th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties, in order to recognise and honour the contributions of individuals, organisations and governments around the world in promoting the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
Through Decision 20.10 the Standing Committee adopted the Criteria and Procedure for the Award. The Committee also accepted the generous offer from the Danone Group (France) to provide US$ 10,000 for each of the three Wetland Conservation Awards, under the name of "Evian Special Prize". The call for nominations was issued early in 1998, and was communicated to Contracting Parties through Diplomatic Note 1998/4 (20 February 1998). By the deadline of 31 July, a total of 74 valid nominations were received. At its 21st Meeting in October 1998, the Ramsar Standing Committee elected the laureates of the three Awards.
The Bureau is pleased to announce to the Contracting Parties the names of the recipients of the Award, in each of three categories: Government institutions, Individuals, and NGOs:
Government institution: The Pacific Estuary Conservation Program, Canada;
Individuals: Award given jointly to Mr Victor Pulido, Peru, and Professor Vitaly G. Krivenko, Russia;
NGOs: Award given jointly to the Society for the Protection of Prespa, Greece, and the Lake Naivasha Riparian Association, Kenya.
The Awards, together with the Evian Special Prize, will be presented to the laureates or their representative at a ceremony at the 7th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (Costa Rica, May 1999).
The Bureau of the Convention on Wetlands respectfully requests that the content of the present Note be communicated to the competent national authorities and avails itself of this opportunity to renew the assurance of its highest consideration.
