World Wetlands Day 2010: Caring our Wetlands with Future Environmentalists

On Feb 02, 2010 (0830-1800Hours) Lincoln Corner Karachi in collaboration WWF Pakistan celebrated its 3rd consecutive World Wetlands Day, this year with the theme "Caring our Wetlands" by hosting a Study Tour of 55 Students & faculty members from Institute of Environmental Studies, University of Karachi at Haleji Lake, a Ramsar Wetland site in Sindh.

Through Mr. Jahangir Durrani, Field expert from WWF Pakistan, the participants learned more about Haleji Lake, which is an ideal refuge for wintering and home of thousands of birds and regarded as one of the most important wintering areas of migratory waterfowl in Eurasia. It is located at 240 48 N and 600 47'E, and is within easy motoring distance, 88 Km, of Karachi. A sanctuary for birds and an outdoor attraction for humans. Haleji became one of the major sources of water supply to the increasing population of Karachi as well as an exquisite refuge for waterfowl. Complete circuit of Haleji is about 12 miles. The main water reservoir covers an area of 6.58 Sq. miles and the maximum depth being 17 feet. Shady trees surround it. Phragmites, Typha, Hydrilla and Lotus cover parts of the lake in swaying patches of colours. Haleji is a bird watcher's paradise. As many as 223 bird species have been recorded in the environs of Haleji lake. For instance, osprey, Pallas's fish eagle, Buzzards, Harriers, falcons, Wigeon, coot, shoveller, pintail, Teals, Mallard, heron, Jacana, flamingos and some times Bewick's swan, all form a marvelous sight for a bird watcher..

The LCK coordinator briefed the audience how these future environmentalists can play a proactive role by adding their support to our wetlands through volunteerism. He also agreed to take an initiative of developing a LCK-Environmentalists listing to share opportunities & ideas using social networking tools. The event also included Bird watching activity and a guided tour of this sanctuary.

This program endorsed LC Karachi continues support & commitment to strengthen our Institutions & organizations, engaged to combat our environmental challenges and to support initiatives to produce awareness.
