January 1, 1998

This is to let you know that the World Wetlands Day Celebrations being organized by the Wetlands Research Centre at the University of Waterloo, set for February 2, 1998, are being organized in partnership with the Wetlands Research Centre, the University of Waterloo, the Waterloo Education Foundation, Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener, and the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Technology (CRESTech).

The celebrations consist of two parts, Part 1 of which will take place during the day for 500 local high school students and teachers. Dr. Ed Maltby from Royal Holloway College of the University of London (Chairman of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management) will begin the morning program with a slide talk and discussion for the students and teachers entitled: "Wetlands of the World: Linking people, wildlife and the environment". A series of talks will be presented over the rest of the day by members of the Wetlands Research Centre, local wetland interest groups, private and industrial sector for the students and teachers.

The evening is being planned as a major media event for the general public. Dr. Maltby will address the evening program with a lecture entitled: "Wetlands - Conservation icon or sustainable development?". Henry Lickers and Richard David of the Mohawk Council of the Akwesasne will offer a blessing for these gifts of nature. Her Honour, The Honourable Hilary Weston, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and the Honourable Christine Stewart, Federal Minister of the Environment have been invited to participate in the program. Clayton Rubec of Environment Canada will provide a brief overview of Ramsar activities in Canada and background about the Ramsar Convention. We are looking forward to having as part of the audience such dignitaries as the Mayors of Canada's Technology Triangle (Cambridge, Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo), local MPs and MPPs, ministerial staff of interested agencies, special interest groups, members of business, financial and educational institutions and high school and university students, all of whom are stakeholders in wetlands. A reception for our special guests and sponsors will follow the evening program.

We are looking forward to a very successful day.
