World Wetlands Day in Poland
Biebrza National Park
WWD - Biebrza National Park, Poland
There is a popular proverb in Poland saying that "Kids and fish have no rights to speak". During the WWD the participants have proved that this proverb is not a truth anymore.
This year Biebrza NP organized WWD which was addressed to school pupils aged 6-13 who lived in the immediate vicinity of the Park. We went out together to the neighboring Ramsar site which was the Wigry National Park to learn more about the project on fish protection. The participants had an extraordinary opportunity to visit fish hatchery (existing since 1926) that supports Wigry lake with new fish generation of rare species.
After, the participants reported their discoveries to a broader audience that gathered at the main event of WWD held in Primary School in Sztabin on February 16th. During this event students had learned more about the threats and problems associated with fish populations, learned more about centuries old fishing traditions as well as about angling. The event was followed by a happening with 280 participants.
