World Wetlands Day 2009 -- Ireland
World Wetlands Day 2009
On February 2nd to mark World Wetlands Day (WWD), Mary Immaculate College’s Geography Society participated in a clean-up of the Westfields wetlands, Condell Road, Limerick. WWD marks the signing date of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. It focuses on the conservation of wetlands and their resources. Westfields is home to numerous wild birds and attracts many migratory species.
The event was led by Seán Halligan, postgraduate student, Department of Geography, Mary Immaculate College and president of its Geography Society. A mountain of rubbish was collected including lorry tyres, cans, bottles and sweet wrappers.
Special thanks to the volunteers; Matteo Cullen, Rathangan, Co. Kildare, Rachel Roche, Bandon, Co. Cork, Shane O’ Sullivan, Glenroe, Co. Limerick, Dermot Troy, Moyross, Co. Limerick and Dr. Catherine Dalton, Department of Geography, Mary Immaculate College.
