World Wetlands Day 2009 -- United States

04/02/2009

World Wetlands Day in Columbus, USA

The Olentangy River Wetland Research Park (ORWRP) had an open house all day to celebrate World Wetland Day Feb 2, 2009. Things were warm and inviting even on a cold icy day with hot cider, cookies, and most important, food and displays from 6 countries (Costa Rica, Spain, Korea, Sweden, China, and Estonia). The displays were developed by graduate students, staff, and visiting scientists at the lab. We had displays of the Ramsar sites in several of those countries and/or research publications from the ORW at those locations. We also showed the 1-hour Korean documentary on wetland restoration that aired in Korea during the 2008 Ramsar COP. The ORWRP is featured prominently in that movie.

We were visited by Ohio State University President Gordon Gee and about 200 others during the day. Also Olentangy Olga, the muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) who appears every Feb 2, watched stoically from the nearby wetland. A good time was had by all.
