World Wetlands Day 2005 -- Greece
WWD '05 at Strofylia-Kotychi
We are happy to inform you that the student photo contest with the theme Pictures full of water from Strofylia and Kotychi was a great success! There were 144 entries from 17 primary and secondary schools from the prefectures of Achaia and Ilia, to which the Ramsar site Strofylia forest and Kotychi lagoon belongs.
The students, with the help of their teachers, revealed to us views of the wetlands at times full of beauty and at times witnesses of human neglect. The quality of the photos made the job of the judging committee most difficult and as a result, four honorary mentions were added to the six prize-winning places.
All the photos were exhibited for the first time at the Ecotourism Centre of the municipality of Larissos, at Prokopos lagoon. The opening and the award of the prizes took place on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day, on the 2nd of February 2005. The event was attended by the President of the Management Agency of the protected area, Mr. Tzanoudakis, as well as members of the board, the Mayor of Larissos Mr Kalaitzis, the Heads of the Environmental Education Departments of the prefectures of Achaia and Ilia, as well as students from eight schools of the area.
All the photographs remained on display for two weeks at the Ecotourism Centre, followed by a week at the Town Hall of the municipality of Vouprasia, to which part of the protected area belongs, as well as during a workshop of the Department of Education of Ilia, at the city of Pirgos. Honorary diplomas were given to all the students who participated in the contest and from the ten photographs that excelled, a poster will be created that will be distributed to the schools of the area. We believe that the involvement of the students in this contest made them look at wetlands more closely and appreciate their importance as well as their beauty.
We would like to thank you again for the information material you have sent us. The posters and stickers were distributed to the schools of the area and were most appreciated by both teachers and students. We are looking forward to a successful World Wetlands Day 2006!
