World Wetlands Day 2005 -- Republic of Korea

28/02/2005

Dear friends from all Contracting Parties,

Ministry of Environment (MOE) in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is pleased to inform that we celebrated the 2005 WWD on 2~3 February 2005 in collaboration with Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF) and South Gyeongsang Province. Regarding the Ramsar Convention for the WWD since 1997, MOE and MOMAF have celebrated it alternately each year since 2002. The 4th ceremony for WWD in the ROK is MOE's turn. In line with the 2005 Ramsar slogan, "There's wealth in the wetland diversity - don't lose it!", MOE's theme is determined "Wetland diversity and wise use policy in the ROK". We want to emphasize that this ceremony is very closely related with the co-funded UNDP/GEF project, "Conservation of Globally Significant Wetlands in the ROK" and can also raise the public awareness of ROK's Wetland Conservation Policy.

The participants of this ceremony are 250 persons including a Minister of Environment, a Minister of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, Parliamentarians, Provincial Governors of South Gyeongsang Province, Local Government Officers, NGOs, International and National wetland specialists, Local Residents and many others (Figure 1). Volunteers are scheduled to have a field excursion to the Ramsar site, Woopo wetland in the Changyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, shown in the poster and invitation card for 2005 WWD (Figures 2, 3, and 4). Detail information is in the following schedule table.

We would welcome your comments for this information.
