2005 WORLD WETLANDS DAY

February 2 of each year since 1997 is World Wetlands Day which coincides with the National Wetlands Day (Proclamation No. 74 dated 02 February 1999). The event is an opportunity for government agencies, non-government organizations and citizens at all levels to undertake actions at raising public awareness of wetland values and the Ramsar Convention in particular. Ramsar Convention or Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

Slogan: "There's wealth in wetland diversity - don't lose it"

Planned activities for 2005 World Wetlands Day

DENR-NCR (RED Corazon Davis):

PAWCZMS - Hanging of streamers (LRT/MRT stations, DENR-NCR office and other offices); river regreening and clean-up (Las Pinas River); distribution of information, education and conservation materials (brochure - facts about wetlands, bookmarker - birds of Manila Bay); ecotour and birdwatching (Manila Bay)

DENR-Region 4 CALABARZON (RED Primitivo Galinato):

Quezon - coastal clean-up and mangrove tree planting in Catanauan; information and education drive; coastal clean-up and tree planting in mangove areas in Calauag; Laguna - hanging of streamers and clean-up of Tadlak Lake in Los Banos; River Clean-up and River stabilization / Tree Planting at Carmona Cavite with the DENR Staff, Local Government Unit and Non Government Organization.

DENR-Region 4 MIMAROPA (OIC, RED Pobleo M. Florece):

Oriental Mindoro-Hanging of streamers with the slogan " There's wealth in Wetland Diversity-don't lose it" in all PENRO's and CENRO's. Press releases (pre-post) on local newspapers and guesting on local radio stations in Oriental Mindoro to discuss about the launching of the World Wetlands Day in Naujan Lake National Park on February 2, 2005 and bird wathing at the lake. Guesting on local radio stations in Oriental Mindoro will discuss about the following topics: 1) benefits of wetland diversity, especially in Naujan Lake National Park and MIMAROPA 2) to discuss the benefits of Naujan Lake National Park as a Ramsar site and 3) to announce the scheduled of laying the Marker in NLNP as a Ramsar site. The Marker will be placed at Barangay Halls in the towns of Pola, Victoria, Naujan and Socorro. invited in the said affair is the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines Hon. Noli De Castro, Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Hon. Michael T. Defensor, Governor of Oriental Mindoro and the mayors of Pola, Victoria, Naujan and Socorro of Oriental Mindoro. Awards/certificates will be given to some members of the community as a token of their contribution to the welfare of the wetland diversity in NLNP.

DENR-Region 3 (RED Regidor M. de Leon):

Bulacan hanging of streamer, conduct lectures on wetlands values, and coastal clean-up in Guiguinto; Tarlac - hanging of streamers; conduct lectures and distribution of information, education and conservation materials; riverbank and road side clean up by CENRO staff with the Local Government unit's Municipality of Victoria personnel (in Canarem, Victoria); information dissemination in flood prone barangays, and schools; strategic planning during rainy season (in several towns of Camiling); Pampanga - hanging of streamer, conduct of lecture and distribution of information materials on wetlands and bird watching in Pampanga City

DENR-Region 6 (RED Vicente S. Paragas):

Negros Occidental - hanging of streamers and lcal radio station guesting to discuss wetlands values in Sipalay City; birdwatching in Malabong, Ilog; lecture on wetlands biodiversity and mangrove planting in Andulawan, Ilog; local talk shows and radio station guesting to discuss wetland values and also wetland film showing in Hinobaan; Capiz - display of streamers and distribution of IEC materials in Roxas City and Ivisan, bird counting in Ivisan; Aklan - display of streamers, local radio guesting to discuss the celebration, mangorve palnting, press release on the occasion, slogan/poster making contest for elementary and high school students and essay writing contest for college students in Kalibo;

DENR-Region 9 (OIC RTD Eduardo M. Bisquera, Jr.):
Briefing on Mangrove Nursery Preparation, installation of Marker and Mangrove Planting in Mampang Wetland Area, Mampang, Zamboanga \ City; hanging of streamers (Regional Office, ; radio programs (DXMR-Radyong Bayan and Radyo Agong); press releases (leading newspapers); convocation (DENR Kalikasan Open Stage); tree/mangrove planting in Mampang and Talon-talon wetland areas by personnel/staff of CENRO Zamboanga West with the LGUs, NGO, and academe; Lake Maragang by CENRO staff of Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur; Lakewood by PENRO staff of PENRO, Zamboanga del Sur; Liburan River by CENRO staff of Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte; IEC/dalaw turo to selected schools/community/coastal barangays by PAWCZMS/PENRO Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte; MOA signing with WMSU (Adopt-A-Wetland Area).
