Greetings! Here is the report of the 2003 World Wetland's Day Celebration of DENR Region 8.

Tacloban City, Philippines.

World Wetlands Day 2003 Celebration

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 8 celebrated the World's Wetlands Day last February 02, 2003. The celebration was set on the 3rd of February since February 2 fell on a Sunday.

Several activities were conducted which highlighted the wetland's day celebration such as the Poster Making Contest, Quiz Bee and Environment Games. The participants of the contests were personnel from the different DENR Sectors of the Regional Office. The Protected Areas and Wildlife Division in Region 8 have set the Criteria for the Poster Making Contest which gave weight to the relevance to the theme, creativity and originality. Poster Making Contest participants are registered as follows:

1. Alfredo Mardon - Land Evaluation party (LEP)
2. Rene Omega - Land Mgt. Sector (LMS)
3. Rico Bohol - Coastal Environment Program (CEP)
4. Violino Cinco - Land Evaluation Party (LEP)

The result of the contest had Violino Cinco as the first prize winner, Rene Omega as the second and Alfred Maraon as the 3rd prize winner.

The other two (2) games, the Quiz Bee and Environment Games was likewise participated by DENR employees. The Quiz Bee Contest had Five (5) participants/contestants they were: Lea Salazar (Legal Division), Maritess Patindol (FRDD), Marissa Salazar (FRDD), Leslie dela Cruz (ERDB) and Glenn Graciano (CEP). The winners for this category were: Leslie de la Cruz (1st), Maritess Patindol (2nd) and Glenn Graciano (3rd).

In the Environment Game, Waste Segregation Game and Wildlife Game were played by contestants. The participants to these games were: Nestor Lacanario, Braullo Barbasa, Maritess Patindol, Marissa Salazar, Paz Dongsal, Catalina Nuñez and Teresa Saceda. Winners of the respective games were: Melchora Perante for the Wildlife Game and Catalina Nuñez, Marissa Salazar, Mendel Perante, Julie Vilas and Nestor Lacanaria for the Waste Segregation Game.

Prior to date of the World Wetland's Day Celebration (Jan 2), several activities were conducted. These activities are: Wader Bird Census in the monitoring Sites such as Carigara Bay Wetlands, Ormoc Bay Wetlands and Brgy. Baras Wetlands in Guiuan E. Samar, and A Dalaw-Turo which is an information drive made simpler to be understood by the children in the primary level and the local communities was conducted in Brgy. Baras Elementary School.

At the DENR Regional Office 8 can be seen an exhibit on the celebration of the World Wetland's day. Some informative materials and pictures were displayed for the DENR personnel and visitors to read. In addition, information materials on the values and importance of wetlands were likewise distributed. A press release was as well aired at a local radio station in Tacloban City.

The field offices of DENR, Region 8 likewise joined the World Wetland's Day Celebration. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Offices of Leyte, Biliran and Eastern Samar and Community Environment Natural Resources Office of Dolores, E. Samar, Information Education campaign (IEC) within the PENR Offices and to the communities. The aforementioned offices distributed flyers on wetlands to the communities such as Brgys. San Isidro and Polac of Sta. Fe Leyte anf Brgy. Divisoria, Alanag-Alang, Leyte. PENRO, Leyte also conducted a site visitation to one of the wetland areas in Brgy. San Jose, Tacloban City.

The 2003 World Wetlands Day Celebration was so far a successful undertaking.
