World Wetlands Day 2003:
Dr P S Hari Kumar (drpshari@yahoo.co.in), Centre for Water Resources Development & Management, Calicut, Kerala, India, writes that the “Centre has celebrated this year's World Wetlands Day on Feb 1 by holding rallies, street drama and awareness campaign. The following themes were included for this year: Save Cannoly canal (a canal of 11 KM constructed across Calicut City, now has become a place for solid and liquid waste dumping ), Save Kottuli Wetland (A wetland in the heart of City) etc.”
The functions were arranged with people's participation. Around 100 young men and women volunteers took part in the rally with playcards showing the importance of protecting the wetlands. Dr E J James, Executive Director, CWRDM gave the keynote address during the occasion. The programme was organised with the help of Nehru Yuva Kendrs and KARMA, an NGO.
A Photo Exhibition showing the arrival of migratory birds to wetlands of Calicut City is being organised from Feb 1 to 3 2002. The materials received from Ramsar Bureau are also being exhibited."
