World Wetlands Day 2003: Philippines

13/02/2003

WWD in Zamboanga City, Philippines

1 February, 2003

Today we just conducted an information, education campaign over radio station (RMN Network); we started the radio program at 6:00 AM here in Zamboanga City. Ms. Gina Lacastesantos and I were interviewed on the importance and benefits of wetlands. Another group went to a community adjacent to a wetland area for a lecture and film presentation. This was sponsored by a local university in their community outreach. Topics to be discussed included: wetlands protected area, and solid wastes management. The objective was to let the community become involved in a sustainable freshwater use, management and protection.

Tomorrow, another radio station invited us for a two-hour program. We shall take with us officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to talk on water-related issues. On Monday, February 3, a special convocation is prepared at the Open Stage of our office. We have invited the Vice Mayor of Zamboanga City to give his message on the occasion of WWD 2003.

We have other activities scheduled for the month: river clean-up; signing of memorandum of understanding with three school science clubs to co-manage our mangrove botanical garden / ecological destination; clean-up / tree planting of our newly established nature center near a coastal area with the Boy Scouts group; orientation/workshop on biodiversity education among science teachers; census / information campaign for a  fishing village of an island declared as a protected area.
