World Wetlands Day 2002: United Kingdom
World Wetlands Day at Crawfordsburn Country Park, Northern Ireland

Dear Valerie, I enclose a couple of photographs from our day here on 02.02.02.
By way of a short report, we held an event entitled:
"Ponds and Wildlife Gardening: Improving the Biodiversity of Your Backyard?" (Starting at 2.pm)
The event took the shape of a slide show and talk lasting 45 minutes to an hour, while our workshop here was furnished for arts and crafts activities and indoor pond dipping.
Around 22 people came to our event, which was brave seeing as how the weather has been notably unpredictable of late. 14 came in for the slide show while 8 chose to get stuck into the arts and crafts and pond dipping. After the talk everyone came into the workshop we had another c.10-15 members of the public dropping in, so there was a good "trickle" if not a stream of people.
We have an excellent video-microscope in the workshop, and a tank full of pond water and vegetation from our pond at Scrabo Country Park just over the hills from here. This yielded plenty of Mayfly and Damselfly larvae, and lots of worms and bugs that the children had a chance to view in detail at a whole different scale! The big frieze and the badges the children made around the theme of wetlands and ponds were fabulous and we are currently displaying their work in the centre.
The day was greatly enjoyed by those who came along, and given that we had unexpected demands on staffing we had just about the right number of people for a good hands-on session, though it would have been good to have had more people for the talk / slide show.
Hope everything else went well, and thanks for the stickers and callenders - greatly appreciated by all.
All the best,
Crawfordsburn Country Park,
