World Wetlands Day 2002 in Latvia

On 1 February in Latvian Nature Museum will take place a press conference on World Wetlands Day and the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of our wetlands. In the press conference will participate our minister of Environmental protection and regional development, administrative authority of Ramsar convention and representatives from Kemeri and Gauja national parks and Teici nature reserve. It is planned that the minister will announce a call to schoolchildren of Latvia to write essays on cultural heritage of wetlands in their neighbourhood.

On 2 February in Kemeri national park the celebration will start in Lapmezciems village secondary school with an opening of the World Wetlands Day at 11.00, followed by a presentation about the Ramsar site - Kanieris lake and an awarding of the winners of the children drawing and tales competition about the Kanieris site. In afternoon at Kanieris lake there will be setting up of an information stand and later - mowing of reeds in the lake and giving a presentation "A way from a reed to a reed roof".

On 8, 9, 22, and 23 February in Gauja national park there will be excursions on skis to Suda bog together with National park's experts of zoology, culture history and geology.

Also during a spring term pupils of schools which are located in the territory of the National park will be invited to develop their projects (during so called "project weeks") about cultural expressions related to Gauja river. Suggested themes include:
· "Mires of the Gauja national park and legends, tales and toponyms, related to them",
· "Arms of the river Gauja"
· "Rafts men of the river Gauja"
· "The different ways of crossing of the river Gauja".

Teici nature reserve will celebrate World Wetlands Day together with Green days (celebrations of Natura 2000) in April. In the beginning there will be a workshop on wetlands and their values and functions and afterwards - excursion to Teici bog.
